Sailun Group Partners with Stakeholders to Advance Sustainable Development of the Natural Rubber Value Chain

2026/04/16

Natural rubber is a core raw material for the tyre industry. Its ecological protection and sustainable supply are not only critical to the high-quality development of the global tyre sector, but also form a key pillar of Sailun Group’s sustainability strategy. As a member of the Global Platform for Sustainable Natural Rubber (GPSNR), Sailun Group, in 2025, led the launch of the “Sustainable Livelihoods and Ecological Education Promotion Project for Natural Rubber Smallholders in Eastern Thailand” under the GPSNR Shared Investment Mechanism.

The project brings together strategic partners across the natural rubber value chain, including the Rubber Authority of Thailand, Rayong (RAOT-Rayong), and Save the Children Thailand. Through multi-stakeholder collaboration, the initiative aims to effectively promote the sustainable development of the natural rubber ecosystem.

Recently, Sailun Group invited GPSNR CEO Stefano Savi and his delegation to Thailand to conduct a field visit and review the project’s phased achievements. This initiative reflects Sailun’s commitment to its “eco+” sustainability strategy and its active role in advancing global governance systems for sustainable natural rubber.

Addressing Smallholder Needs and Strengthening Compliance Foundations

The natural rubber industry is a vital source of income for millions of smallholder households in eastern Thailand. To enhance sustainable production capabilities and compliance awareness, the project focuses on the core needs of 500 smallholders.

Targeted training programmes on environmentally responsible tapping techniques and regulatory compliance have been delivered. In parallel, an innovative consultation network—comprising one central hub, eight fixed stations, and five mobile units—has been established to provide accessible, ongoing support. These services include policy interpretation, EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) compliance guidance, and practical problem-solving assistance.

The project has also developed a structured and replicable knowledge system, including training materials on low-impact tapping techniques and compliance guidance. Particular emphasis has been placed on encouraging participation by women and young people, fostering intergenerational knowledge transfer and strengthening long-term sustainability practices.

During the visit, the delegation engaged in technical discussions with officials from RAOT Rayong on key topics such as sustainable tapping methods and rubber tree management. They also inspected standardised production lines and logistics facilities, gaining insights into production processes, quality control, and traceability systems. The consultation stations were reviewed in operation, with positive recognition given to the integrated “technology + services + compliance” support model.

Soil Improvement and Sustainable Enhancement of Rubber Plantation Productivity

To address challenges such as improper tapping practices and soil degradation in eastern Thailand, the project has established five GPSNR demonstration plots. Smallholders are provided with organic soil improvement packages and professional tapping tools free of charge, alongside systematic promotion of sustainable soil management techniques.

These measures aim to improve both yield and quality of natural rubber while expanding income opportunities for farmers. During site visits, the delegation observed pH monitoring systems and assessed the effectiveness of soil treatment measures. Notable improvements included reduced soil acidity and enhanced growing conditions for rubber trees.

Direct engagement with farmers provided valuable insights into on-the-ground challenges and the practical application of distributed resources and technologies. The delegation commended the project’s pragmatic approach in strengthening ecological cultivation foundations and enhancing long-term plantation productivity.

Ecological Education for Future Generations

Beyond immediate livelihood improvements, the project places strong emphasis on long-term development through education. It supports infrastructure upgrades in three schools attended by children of rubber farmers.

In collaboration with Save the Children Thailand, dedicated ecological education corners focused on natural rubber have been established, accompanied by tailored curricula and activities such as themed drawing competitions. These initiatives deepen students’ understanding of the natural rubber industry and foster environmental awareness.Additionally, a scholarship programme has been introduced to provide financial support to disadvantaged students from smallholder families.

The delegation visited Rayong Guanghua School and Banraijandee School to review infrastructure improvements and the operation of educational programmes. Scholarships were awarded to high-achieving students from low-income families, demonstrating tangible support for youth development and reinforcing the long-term value of educational empowerment.

Discussions with Save the Children Thailand also explored future collaboration opportunities, particularly in integrating sustainable natural rubber development with children’s ecological education.

Delivering Tangible Results and Sustaining Long-Term Impact

Since its implementation, the project has achieved notable interim results across multiple rubber-producing communities in eastern Thailand. It has significantly enhanced smallholders’ sustainable production capabilities while enabling more children to engage with nature and gain a deeper understanding of the natural rubber industry.

By simultaneously advancing livelihood development and ecological education, the initiative creates a dual-impact model of “economic empowerment” and “environmental stewardship.”

Looking ahead, Sailun Group will continue to leverage its industry leadership and the GPSNR platform to deepen collaboration with upstream and downstream partners, research institutions, and non-profit organisations. The Group remains committed to contributing to biodiversity conservation, strengthening the resilience of the natural rubber supply chain, and promoting high-quality, sustainable development across the global tyre and natural rubber industries.
